As someone who understands Hinduism particularly well, I’ll say that it’s position on offerings is basically “anything goes as long as your heart is in the right place”, but eventually enough people do the same things.. and voilà, it has now become a custom.
Oh yes. Each temple has a community of vendors around who sell specific offerings, and will share a local legend on how it came to be. Hinduism is extremely polytheistic by design, so each temple worldwide can be quite different. Glad you got to experience the Balinese variety!
