A big part of the problem with Alexa is the pronunciation you are using for ‘incorrigible’. The ‘ cor’ should be pronounced like the ‘cor’ in corn NOT like the ‘cour’ of courage.

So... user error? That’s often a problem with me and technology. That said, maybe I need to record Christina saying the word “incorrigible” just to be sure.

Before Amazon Prime destroyed the usefulness of Prime music I used to enjoy our version of an Abbott and Costello routine:

Me: Alexa, play Hard to Hold.

Alexa: Now playing Love Somebody, by Rick Springfield.

I'd do this over and over.

Good one, Len! I don’t use Prime Music, can you explain how it got worse with Amazon Prime?

It went from 2 million songs you could play to 100 million you can shuffle.

I loved this audio post cuz it was so incorrigible. If anything I'd love if it was even MORE incorrigible, so much so that it shattered me w its over the top incorrigibility & I had to crawl into bed & rest for the day & when someone asked me why I was in bed I'd say oh Mr. Incorrigible dropped a new audio piece in his newsletter today & I'm just processing.

Haha, yes! The incorrigibility is strong with this one!

I have been waiting my whole life for the perfect place to bestow the joy of Barney Fife stumbling masterfully through The Emancipation Proclamation. He probably wouldn't do any better with incorrigible! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yupu8DE6vzw

Smart move adding the audio dimension. At this point SN can't be stopped.

SN can be stopped. From what I hear, hackers--some aligned with various nations, others that are freelance, all of whom are incorrigible--are working hard to take down vital digital projects like banking, power grids, and humor newsletters. Also, in all seriousness, thank you for this comment, dude!

I looked into doing more audio earlier this year but was too jammed up to really dive in. Nonetheless, my understanding is some good quality headphones and a modestly priced microphone go a long way toward producing good audio. I'm planning to pick up my research again soon and will share any findings.

Also, to confirm, you pronounced "incorrigible" with an unexpected "curr", which likely confused our robot overlords at Amazon.

I have a mic and headphones. I’m using the voice memo app on my Mac for now because it’s easier. My goal is to graduate to garage band so I can edit and clean up the mix. But right now... baby steps.

As for the pronunciation, you’re probably right. But I need to record Christina saying incorrigible before I let our robot overlords off the hook.

Very nice.

Even if you both pronounced it slightly off, AMZN is still evil. We should never let them off the hook.

You knew the definition! You used it in your opening salvo!

You were probably bitching about your mom, sister, co-worker who'd done something unfathomable.

I don't use any device except map quest. The obscure places I need to take clients required me to break my no devices vow. But now, I love and depend on her. Alexa creeps me out. She's a voyeur. And a commercial spy. I suspect map quest and Alexa share secrets. But I don't want to know.

I haven't listened to the audio yet. It will change the way I perceive you. I haven't decided if I'm ready for that right now. Sounds silly, huh? But it's like the movie version of a book. What if the characters don't match correctly?

Expand full comment

Christie, I don't think it sound silly at all. Actually, I think you're 100% correct about audio. There will be a shift in perception no matter what. I totally understand your conundrum. Well, maybe it's not a full on conundrum, but you know... Also, you're right again, Alexa is a commercial spy. She freaks me out, but Christina has this vision of us living in the future and just talking to all of our machines and devices, sorta like they're droids in Star Wars, and so I am surrounded by devices (spies).

I like hearing you read your story. I've been dabbling in the voice recording of my posts as well. Like you, I'm using baby steps. Using the recording application on Substack and using my headset with built in microphone. I don't think I sound quite as far away as you do, but maybe that's because you are in a bigger space? Either way, it was still easy to hear it and follow along. That's what I like about Substack. It doesn't have to be perfect to still be shared and get the benefit of the story.

And as for words, I agree with someone else who said "discombobulating." I have no idea what it means, but I now how to use it in a sentence! ;)

Thank you, Kim! Baby steps for the win! And also, discombobulating is a great word!

I think Larry would tell you to buy a $100 microphone, get into a closet (with clothes, not boxes), and try again. But he would love hearing you read a story as I did.

We have no Alexas or Googles. And we’ve both turned Siri off. For different reasons. Me, I find audio to be a slow interface and being more than slightly deaf, I have a hard time listening. She, worried about Skynet getting all of her data.

Thank you! I do need to get a better mic, better recording situation (too many hard surfaces in our house), and better software so I can edit & mix. These are baby steps for me. I find that when thrown into the deep end, especially when technology is involved, I sink fast. But if I can slowly wade into deeper waters, I can swim. So it's really help to hear this feedback, and I'm grateful that you gave this a shot.

You did a great job reading! Even just getting closer to your existing mic would help, but there are a lot of good USB mics in the $100 range. (Makes for a nice Christmas gift.)

If you really want to perform at Carnegie Hall, it is available for rental. My wife was in a small church choir and they sung at Carnegie Hall. The rental was paid for, in part, by selling tickets to the singers’ families.

If I listen to the audio version, do I have to record my comments. Actually, I am because we have a power failure and I’m having to use the phone and have Siri help me

Even though this is a new version of an old situation normal I will answer one of the questions. I’ve always like the old word discombobulated.

That is a great word! I hope the power situation gets resolved!
