Congrats! Particularly on spinning another round of corporate apocalypse into opportunity. I’d definitely read your version of an atlas, looking forward to more.
Tokyo is at the top of my travel list. I want to see the ancient temples and gardens, then hit the nerdy stuff (theme parks, vintage game stores, cat cafes).
This is so exciting! I have a similar story -- travel was a huge part of my life, especially when I was young. I studied abroad, got grants to spend months abroad during the summers, but then dedicated my 20s to building a career. I finally returned to travel (after 9 years) with a month alone in Bali! I LOVED IT! It is indeed paradise. Rent a motorbike and drive around everywhere. Make sure to get out of the touristy areas too. Highly recommend Sideman, Munduk, and the Gili Islands
Thanks for the advice, Ali! Gili Islands are on the list. Will do the other stuff too, except for the motorbike. I know it’s the easiest way to get around, but I’m accident prone and I tend to break bones.
Years ago I went to Tibet with my parents. We flew from London to Beijing and then took a three-day train (meant to be a one day cross country train but there were several chaotic travel errors) to Tibet. You sleep in bunk beds, no showers, the carriage shakes like mad, but the views are incredible.
Getting to Tibet by train is better because you don't suffer the insane high altitude sickness, nonetheless oxygen masks are supplied throughout. If you ever want to do it, a travel guide is a must. Nobody speaks English, only Chinese.
I've never been to Bali, so I'm very excited to experience it vicariously through your eyes. In a way, you kind of are taking all of us with you! Also, what wonderful way to celebrate 10 years of marriage. Congratulations!
BTW, I’m in a race to finish volume 3 of LBJ before Bali. I think I’ll finish in time because I can’t sleep before a flight. I wanna read more about Bali (and some fiction) while I’m away, then I gotta go back for volume four and five, whenever that one comes out.
I love the idea of you staying up all night to finish vol. 3 of an LBJ bio. Most people binge Netflix, Michael Estrin binges 1,000 page history books 😂🤣
It’s true. I’d rather read a book than watch tv. But maybe one day, if the tv world adapts Mr. Caro’s books about LBJ, I’ll binge that. Of course, if the adaption is faithful, I’ll need a two-week staycation to binge all 15 seasons.
Never been to Bali but it looks wonderful. As for me I'm more of a Portugal and Spain enthusiast. Both great trips in 2019 and I can't wait to get back there.
Spent a summer working for my dad in Barcelona. Loved it! But I haven’t been back since and I really didn’t get to explore the rest of Spain. I always hear great things Portugal. For some reason that one flies under the radar. Anyway, both of Spain and Portugal are on the list for future adventures!
Best vacation ever has to be the 11 days that my daughter and I spent in Iceland - so big, so beautiful, so few people. It's definitely one I'd like to do again. There's still so much more to be seen.
Sounds like an amazing trip! I've always wanted to go to Iceland. Before the pandemic, I think there was a new-ish budget airline that offered really low fares to Iceland - like a few hundred dollars from LA. You probably couldn't bring bags, or eat a meal, and maybe they made you sit in the cargo hold, but I would've done it. Sadly, I think they're out of business. But yeah, I need to go to Iceland. What time of year did you go there?
Yep, that was WOW Airlines. We upgraded to what they called their Big Seats. It covered luggage, a snack, and beverages. Still cheap. Rest of the plane was pretty much steerage. People were sleeping on the floor.
Congrats on your upcoming adventure! My wife and I went to Egypt (pre Arab Spring). Standing in front of the Pyramid of Khufu, we went speechless. A zillion pictures, and yet you see it for the first time.
Thank you, we're really excited! And although I joked about Egypt, it's still very much on the list. I really want to see all of the ancient wonders of the world before I die.

Christina is the ultimate corporate apocalypse survivor, and after my years in PR I believe I can spin anything! Glad you'll be reading!
My wife and I went to the Galapagos Islands for our honeymoon. Absolutely spectacular.
That sounds like a fantastic honeymoon!
A must visit locale. It's a pretty physical trip. Go before retirement age if you can.
Oh boy! So excited for you guys! Have fun-bun!!!
Thank you! We will!
Bon voyage! Looking forward to your dispatches.

Thank you! And you’re in luck. I hear there are cat cafes in Bali, and Christina says we’re going!
Cat pix, plz!

Awesome that you’re coming along! And thank you!

Haha!
I am SO looking forward to seeing Bali through your eyes.
I, too, regret never having traveled the road to Zyzzyx. I expect there will be another opportunity. I hope so.
Glad you’re on board for Bali!

Yes, that was the airline! Couldn’t remember the name. I heard there’s a new one. If they last until next fall, I might have to go to Iceland.
Oh, and we went mid-October. Not as crowded and really not that cold. Just wore a puffy jacket and a scarf.
