We’re going to Paris next month. We’ll be there a week. The flight from Los Angeles takes about eleven hours. I’ll likely read two or three books on this trip. My TBR list is long (and getting longer all the time), but I’m skipping my list. The way I see it, one of the greatest pleasures you can experience as a reader is reading a novel set in a location you’re currently visiting.
More than a decade ago — yikes has it been that long? — I fell in love with John Burdett’s novels while Christina and I explored Thailand. As an American, Thailand felt inscrutable. But when viewed through the eyes of Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep, a half-Thai, half-American, fully stoned Buddhist cop, Thailand and its relationship with the West began to make sense.
When we visit Christina’s family in Florida, Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey make me feel like the only sane person in an insane place. Also, their books are hilarious.
In Mexico, Don Winslow’s Border Trilogy, beginning with The Power of The Dog, helped me better understand the insanity and horrors of America’s losing war on drugs. Also, Winslow might just be the greatest crime writer of his generation.
There’s a theme here, of course. I don’t just read novels that compliment my travels, I read crime novels set in the places I visit.
And that’s where you come in. I need recommendations for crime novels set in Paris.
Is that information available via Google? Probably.
Could I find the books I’m looking for on Reddit? Yes.
But I have a hunch that your answers are gonna be a lot better. Plus, we’ll get a good conversation going about French crime novels. So hit me with your recommendations in the comments👇
Coming to Los Angeles?
I’ve got a book for you — my novel! Not Safe for Work is a hilarious slacker noir set in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. Pick up a copy of Not Safe for Work on Amazon, or all the other book places.
You might look into the Arsène Lupin novels. After watching the tv show, I fell in love with the character. The books are on my TBR list but haven’t read them yet.
I haven’t read any crime novels set in Paris, but Georges Simenon’s books are on my TBR
